Veteran's or Remembrance Day
Nov. 11th, 2009 10:37 amI come from a family of veterans from all four branches of the military. My dad served in the Army in WWII. He never saw combat or was even deployed overseas. I'm not sure the story behind that, but I think he got nearly deathly ill right here in the U.S. and was discharged. Uncles on my mother's side, one was in the Navy in WWII. I remember seeing old black and white photos at my grandmother's that he took from the deck of a ship somewhere in the Pacific a showing mushroom cloud. Yes, that kind of mushroom cloud. That uncle had tuberculosis later. Two of my mother's brothers served in the Army during the Korean War. Uncle Jesse didn't come home from that one.
All three of my brothers served. The oldest in the Air Force during the Vietnam war, though he was only in Vietnam a short time on temporary duty from Japan. My middle brother was in the Marines and in Vietnam. He was never the same as before. He told one of my sisters that they made him do things that good American boys just don't do. It breaks my heart. My youngest brother spent several years in the Marines and one hitch in the Navy. He was slated to go to Lebanon just before all of our troops were pulled out. We all breathed a sigh of relief. Which brings it down to me, I served six years in the Army, 1975-1981.
My poppy is for all my family, but especially my uncle, Jesse, who I never met.
