food
Thanks to getting a bag of trail mix (yes, they do now make mixes I'm not allergic to!), I upped my weekly fruit and veggie type count by 6! I've got a lot more variety in this week's grocery pickup, too.

family
I went to my parents' for my brother's early birthday party over the weekend. (I didn't take any yarn, which was weird.) I mulched flower beds and counted bluebonnets and helped rip out a giant dead elaeagnus, and I spent *several* hours working on their new laptop and ancient desktop, both of which had a number of viruses. I installed Brave on the laptop, so hopefully that will minimize any new infections. And when I got home I binged on the gf peanut butter cookies mom made me, because I cannot control myself. Which messed up my blood sugar in my labs for today's doc appt, oops. Oh well.

Tomorrow is the annual National Canadian Film Day. All around the world, let's stand up for Canada and sit down to some Canadian cinema!

If you watch a Canadian movie tomorrow and feel like coming back here to post about what you saw, please do.

In March I got delightful postal mail from [personal profile] sidleypkhermit! It was a combination of two cards -- one card inside the other -- and a bunch of intensely adorable stickers. Great timing about the stickers because earlier this year someone gave me a sticker book -- which is the first time I am assembling my stickers all in one place and with an eye to some kind of intentional organization -- and now I'm going to make one section of the sticker book specifically "stickers from fen".

I had a dream last night. I was in some sort of bar/club playing some sort of card game. There were multiple small rectangular table that could seat 3 or 4 people on one side with a dealer/bartender on the other side. Anyway I was playing the card game and told the bartender I wanted water not another cocktail. The next thing I know CKR comes up beside me and gives me a hug. And I said to him "You just made my day." He gave me that blinding smile of his and a little peck on the lips. Then he sat down and played cards with me.

What the actual hell subconscious?! That was just so random.

Not Quite the Book Cover Meme

Back in...hmmm...1980 I believe, we were given Anne McCaffrey's Dragonflight as a text for English. Maybe they were trying to modernise the curriculum? Anyway, precocious child that I was, I had already read it. Probably twice. I read a bunch of other Pern books, but not all of them. (I also read a bunch of her other books, straddling the sci-fi/fantasy/romance genres.) Then I forgot about them until this meme.

They're...not great. The sexual politics alone are a bit skeevy, in that '70s sense of "women shouldn't want to have sex, but if they have to they can enjoy it". But they were a formative part of my adolescence (which also included Ian Fleming's soft-core porn and sadomasochism masquerading as spy novels /o\) and I feel nostalgic about them. Not enough to reread them.

Thankfully, I don't have to. There's a podcast! The duo at Dragons Made Me Do It have done the hard work of reading, thrown some great analysis at the books, and even made recommendations of other, better books that people might enjoy instead.

If like me you recall the books with misty nostalgia, you might enjoy the podcast. And if you're tempted to read the books, this tumblr post is a good guide to resisting the dragons' call.

yarning
I have started crocheting again a little at a time, so as not to freak out my shoulder. I've missed it so much, even though I still do it on Sundays at yarn group. My daily routine has changed so much since hurting my shoulder. I clean the house and stare at my plants where before I would sit on the couch yarning. This speaks badly of what the house looked like before, but at least it looks better now.

dirt
I propagated my rhaphidophora and watch chain. Watched more arugula sprout. Watched impatiently for the spinach-mustard to sprout (spoiler: it hasn't). Pruned the Nogalito tree down to only two trunks. I split and repotted into 2/3 the outdoor thaumatophyllums (tree philodendrons) (bc it was a glorious day yesterday) and moved the little pup indoors. Also repotted the indoor money tree (Pachira aquatica). The pilea pepperomides is struggling. And the last flower of my adenium dropped this morning, so I pruned off the tallest trunk and am waiting for it to callus before I stick it in the pot.

food
I don't think it's possible for me to eat 30 different fruits and vegetables per week, not when I'm allergic to so many and my meals are so small. cut for discussion of intentional weight loss )

Snippet:

Ben picked up his cellphone and dialed Ray’s number. His partner answered after just two rings. ″Ray Kowalski.″

″I love you, Ray Kowalski.″

″Ben? What’s wrong?″

″Nothings wrong. I just wanted to hear your voice and tell you that I love you utterly and completely.″

″Okay, now listen. Have you been drinking? Did someone slip something in your tea? What gives?″

Ben couldn’t help but grin. His partner was nothing if not suspicious even of a simple impromptu I love you. ″Nothing like that. It’s just that I wanted to hear your voice and tell you how I feel.″

After a short pause, Ray asked, ″Tell me what that woman did. Did she make a pass? Ask you to run away on tour? What?″

Ben chuckled. ″I’ll tell you tonight.″

″Tell me now. Otherwise, I might just end up making a scene at the station.″

″You wouldn’t do that.″

″I might do that if you don’t tell me what’s going on. You met Tracy Jenkins at the airport, right?″

″I did, yes. She apparently thought my asking her to do the concert was a ploy to renew a romance that was only in her own mind.″

″Fuck. I’ll set her straight. Let me at her.″

″There’s no need, Ray. I told her about us. She accepted it rather well considering.″

″Considering what?″

″Considering she went on to ask if Ezra was single.″

″Jesus.″
