I'd be on my way to Boston, right now. Correction, if I were rich I'd already be in Boston. I'm trying not to pout or be sad today. Muskrateers, please raise a glass for me sometime this weekend.

They have called this day the Eleventh of March! And whomsoever of you gets through this day, unless you are shot in the head or somehow slain, you will stand at tiptoe when e'er you hear the name again, and you will get excited at the name March the Eleventh!

We happy few, we few, we band of brothers. Our names will be as like household names. And those who are not here, be they sleeping or doing something else, they will feel themselves... sort of crappy. Because they are not here to... to join the fight, on this day, the Eleventh of March! - Buck Frobisher, RCMP, due South: Call of the Wild

That said, Happy Friday to you all. I'm off this morning to Revelcon and will be back Sunday evening. Be good, everyone.

I probably don't do this often enough, but we have a long standing con in Houston. This year the dates are March 11-13. It's hard to believe but this year will be Revelcon 22. I've been to every single one, and now I'm on the convention committee and have been for the past 4 or 5 years. I mostly work on the panels and run them during the con. Which means I see that they start and end at the right time and that the moderators, which we call panelists, are there. If not, I hunt them down like the dogs they are. *g* We have an impressive panel line-up this time, if I do say so myself.

Revelcon 22 Panel Room Panels )

We also have several video clip and demonstration panels in our video room, and where we have our Friday night party and vid show and our Saturday night Cabaret/Costume Contest. It's a wonderful tiered room. There's not a bad seat in the place except behind one of the beams. We are so lucky this hotel has it available. I'm getting so excited for our con!

He was 65 and died from cancer today. So sad. His most famous role was Arthur Dietrich on the immortal Barney Miller, the best sitcom ever made, IMO. The man made me laugh. You gotta love someone that makes you laugh and morn when they leave us.

When I came home from work Thursday afternoon the whole front patio area was covered in tiny, little seeds. It's hard to describe exactly how my house and yard are configured, but the garage sets in front and between the back of the garage and the house is mostly concrete. I have a plant bed along one side and an area in the corner on the other side where the oleander tree is. The plant bed goes almost up to opposite the front door. There's an overhang making a small porch area. These seeds were scattered all over just that area. They weren't on the driveway or the little bit of yard out front and outside the fenced part of the yard. They weren't on the side or at the back of my house. Only there in this small courtyard type area.

I would have thought the seeds blew there (and it was windy that day) if they hadn't been on top of the leaves of the plants in the side bed. If they had fell from the sky, though, how did they get in the covered area? If is was the wind, why weren't they everywhere? I thought at first they were inorganic matter, like something off the roof or our neighbor's roof, but Mr. akite looked at them under a magnifying glass and found they were seeds. Though, not of a type that he'd ever seen before. Me either. Freaky, y/n?

I was starting to go through withdrawal and didn't think I was going to be able to get on line at all today. I'm not sure what the problem is, but I think it's either my network card or the ethernet port at the back of my desk top computer. I'm going to take it tomorrow, I guess. I feel bad about having the cable company out three times when it looks like it's a hardware problem on my part. /o\ I don't even know why it started working again just now. I disconnected everything and hooked it back up again and boom! My computer was seeing the modem again. Don't know how long it will last. When are we going to get those chips in our head so we can surf the net with our brain? In the meantime, I'm going to see if they can patch up the old dinosaur here one more time.

Adobe Flash update! You froze my computer! My computer recovered, obviously, but it was still annoying. I suspect it was all a diabolical scheme by Skipper's nemesis, Dr. Blowhole.

I'm posting this now because [personal profile] mergatrude is in Australia, so it should be right on time. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Let me tell you about my friend, [personal profile] mergatrude. She's a wonderful beta reader. If you've liked almost anything I've written in the last, oh, I don't know, three or four years, you can thank her. She makes everything I write ten times better. I don't think she's ever steered me wrong with a beta suggestion. Besides that, she's a good darn writer herself. [personal profile] mergatrude, I hope your day is filled with everything you love best. *hugs and smooches*

I haven't done this in a long, long time, but I got a couple of Penguins of Madagascar icons today. I wanted to show off my new default. I'm not sure how long it'll stay as my default icon, but I ♥ Skipper.

With all the buzz about Congress possibly overturning the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy in the U.S. military, I thought I'd tell you all how it was for me back in the olden days.

My experiences with homosexuals in the U.S. Army before Don't Ask, Don't Tell )

Please note these are my experiences and my opinions. Someone else that was in the military at the same time may have had a completely different experience.

This past weekend Revelcon was privileged to have Dreamspinner Press in our Dealer's room. They publish original gay fiction. I bought one of their titles last year and enjoyed it very much (Caught Running). This year I bought a historical fiction novel, Dash and Dingo, In Search of the Tasmanian Tiger. It was described to me as sort of an Indiana Jones meets Crocodile Dundee set in the early 1930s. I'm about a third of the way into it and enjoying it very much. So far, it hasn't been graphic, lots of UST, but I'm in no hurry to get to the sexing. I'm having too much fun admiring the scenery along the way.

On a related note only related because I'm amused by both things here )

I come from a family of veterans from all four branches of the military. My dad served in the Army in WWII. He never saw combat or was even deployed overseas. I'm not sure the story behind that, but I think he got nearly deathly ill right here in the U.S. and was discharged. Uncles on my mother's side, one was in the Navy in WWII. I remember seeing old black and white photos at my grandmother's that he took from the deck of a ship somewhere in the Pacific a showing mushroom cloud. Yes, that kind of mushroom cloud. That uncle had tuberculosis later. Two of my mother's brothers served in the Army during the Korean War. Uncle Jesse didn't come home from that one.

All three of my brothers served. The oldest in the Air Force during the Vietnam war, though he was only in Vietnam a short time on temporary duty from Japan. My middle brother was in the Marines and in Vietnam. He was never the same as before. He told one of my sisters that they made him do things that good American boys just don't do. It breaks my heart. My youngest brother spent several years in the Marines and one hitch in the Navy. He was slated to go to Lebanon just before all of our troops were pulled out. We all breathed a sigh of relief. Which brings it down to me, I served six years in the Army, 1975-1981.

My poppy is for all my family, but especially my uncle, Jesse, who I never met.
